Human Resource Development for Fisheries Sector has great potential-GADVASU

Professionally qualified/skilled man power is a critical input for the development of fisheries sector. Realizing the need and role of fisheries education for producing technically competent educationists, scientists, extension personnel, administrators, planners, managers, technicians etc., Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana started both undergraduate & post graduate programmes in Fisheries during 2008-09.The information was revealed by Dr.Kamaldeep Kaur ,Dean , College of Fisheries.

             She said that Bachelor of Fisheries Science (B.F.Sc.) course of 4 year duration offered to 10+2 (PCB) students is for the development of professionals in aquaculture, fisheries management, , fish biotechnology, fish pathology, fishing and post harvest technology, fish marketing etc. In the last year, the students will be provided specialized ‘Hands on training’ (experiential learning) and ‘In-plant training’ to acquire technical knowledge and expertise to work as highly professional human resource in fisheries sector. Postgraduate programme leading to Master of Fisheries Science (M.F.Sc.) in aquaculture is offered to B.F.Sc. degree holders to take up specialized courses for acquiring professional skills in varied disciplines of aquaculture.

While discussing the different avenues in this sector she said that being a professional degree, fisheries science education prepares students for varied jobs in Govt./semi Govt. and private organization such as State Veterinary/Animal Science/Fisheries Universities, Fisheries Colleges, State fisheries Departments, Research Institutes, Government Fisheries Organizations, Fish Farmers Development Agencies, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, State Fisheries Corporations, National banks, International organizations (FAO, NACA), Fish based industries, marketing, trade etc. It also prepares students for having their own business in aquaculture and allied sectors such as seed production; feed manufacturing, water quality testing and disease diagnosis, ornamental fish breeding and seed production, aquarium fabrication and keeping, fish processing and value addition, consultancy services, marketing and trade etc.

The prospectus for B.F.Sc. programme can be obtained from the office of the Dean, Veterinary Sciences, GADVASU, Ludhiana, The last date for submitting the filled form without late fee is May 14, 2010 and with late fee is May 21, 2010.
