Three days training programme on “ornamental fish culture and seed production “ was inaugurated at Department of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries, GADVASU on 27th Jan. 2009. According to Dr. Kamaldeep Kaur, Dean, College of Fisheries, said that ornamental fish culture and seed production holds great potential in Punjab as demand for the same has increased many folds in the past few years. Dr. Asha Dhawan Head, Department of Aquaculture and Coordinator of the training programme told that the training programme has been organized in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Sciences and Technology (PSCST), Chandigarh to promote ornamental fish culture among the fish farmers and women of the State. She also told that successful brood stock rearing and seed production of Koi Carp and Gold fish strains have been carried out in College of Fisheries and the technologies will be demonstrated to the farmers during the training programme.
Twenty five participants from all over the state including women have registered for the training programme. Dr. Jatinder Arora, Assistant Director (Biotechnology), PSCST interacted with the participants to make them aware of the different activities of the PSCST for diversifying occupations. Dr. S.K. Swain, Principal Scientist from Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA, ICAR) has been invited to provide technical guidance for culture and seed production of different freshwater ornamental fishes. An introductory lecture on ornamental fishes suitable for culture and breeding was delivered by Technical Coordinator Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur, Assistant Scientist Fisheries.
