Vet Varsity Research Receives Prestigious Award

A research study addressing antimicrobial usage and resistance (AMR) has earned the prestigious Dr. G. Nirmalan Trust Research Award 2023, conferred by the Veterinary Welfare Society, Kerala. The study was carried out in dairy herds in Punjab through a One Health framework by Dr. Deepthi Vijay, a Ph.D. scholar at the Centre for One Health of the university. This esteemed accolade recognizes outstanding contributions to applied research in the areas of veterinary and animal sciences. The award includes a citation and a cash prize of ?10,000. The research, carried out under the guidance of Dr. Jasbir Singh Bedi, Director of the Centre for One Health, was part of the ICAR Niche area of excellence project titled ‘Antibiotic Resistance: Animal Human Interface’. Integrating field monitoring of antimicrobial usage and resistance with advanced molecular techniques, the study provided actionable insights into combating AMR in Punjab’s dairy sector. It emphasized a holistic One Health approach, addressing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health to tackle this global challenge.
Dr. J P S Gill, Vice-Chancellor of the vet varsity congratulated Dr. Deepthi on her remarkable achievement and commended Dr. Bedi for his exemplary mentorship. He emphasized that such prestigious recognitions reaffirm the quality of research at Varsity and inspire scholars to translate their findings into societal benefits.
Dr. A.K. Arora, Principal Investigator of the Project and Director of Research lauded the research efforts and stressed the critical need for addressing AMR at the human-animal-environment interface. He highlighted the Centre's pivotal role in advancing AMR research, conducting awareness campaigns, and organizing capacity-building initiatives for farmers and public health professionals. This achievement underscores the university’s leadership in veterinary public health and its commitment to addressing critical global challenges through innovative research.
