Vet-varsity earns a patent on an IoT device for authentic milk yield recording

September 30

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, has successfully secured a patent for an innovative method to automate and ensure authentic milk yield recording in the field conditions for dairy farmers practising hand milking in their dairy herds. This innovative solution leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technology for authentic milk recording. The work was initiated and accomplished at the College of Animal Biotechnology. This groundbreaking technology has the potential to revolutionise the dairy industry by ensuring accurate and tamper-proof milk yield tracking of the animals and thereby enhancing transparency and trust in the supply chain. It will also serve as a means for empowering dairy farmers with data-driven insights. The authentic milk yield associated with individual animals will help farmers get better recognition and market prices for their elite animals. The technology will also help dairy breeders to expand the scope of genetic evaluation of dairy animals, enabling them to realise accurate selection and better genetic improvement.
Dr JPS Gill, Vice-chancellor of the varsity, congratulated Dr Neeraj Kashyap the innovator of the technology for the achievement under technical guidance of Dr. YPS Malik and Dr. Inderjeet Singh. Dr Gill added that it is a proud moment for us to be at the forefront of technological innovation, for generating a long-sought solution to the problem of lack of authentic production data in the dairy sector, which has been a major hindrance to the nationwide implementation of genetic improvement programme. This ground-breaking technology has the potential to revolutionise the dairy industry by ensuring accurate and tamper-proof milk-yield tracking of the animals and thereby enhancing transparency and trust in the supply chain.
Dr. Neeraj Kashyap, representing the development team, thanked the vet varsity administration for their wholehearted support and encouragement, which led to success. Dr. Kashyap also encouraged the youth to break the boundaries of the disciplines to develop innovative solutions for the betterment of the animal husbandry sector.
