Dr. Prabjeet Singh of College of Fisheries (COF), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Ludhiana presented an invited lead talk on “Shrimp Farming: A Ray of Hope for Destitute Farmers of Waterlogged Salt Affected Areas of North Western India” in the 2nd Conference on Agricultural Innovation and Natural Resources-2023 organised by Aquatic Science and Innovative Management Division, Faculty of Natural Resources at Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Thailand.
Dr. Singh is currently undergoing 3-months International Faculty Training (IFT) Under University IDP-National Agriculture Higher Education Project (NAHEP) of ICAR, on “Post-harvest quality changes in cultured shrimps during iced and refrigerated storage” at International Centre of Excellence in Seafood Science and Innovation (ICE-SS1), PSU, informed Dr. S.P.S. Ghuman, PI-IDP and Dean, College of Veterinary Science. Dr. Prabjeet Singh played an instrumental role in validation, demonstration and replication of shrimp farming in Punjab, he added.
Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean of COF informed that Dr. Singh was invited to present the university success story on shrimp farming in inland salt affected zero earning waste lands of Punjab and its neighbouring states. The contributions of the university towards economic utilization of inland saline areas for shrimp farming and its impact on socio-economic development of the region, received high accolades from the global fisheries fraternity attending the conference, with deliberations on prospective expansion
Dr. J.P.S. Gill, Director of Research, informed that it is great honour for the university that its scientist is working under an internationally acclaimed seafood scientist Prof. Dr. Soottawat Benjakul, Director, ICE-SSI (PSU), who has published more than1000 research papers having 46,200 citations (H-Index-105). University also signed an MOU with PSU for academic and research cooperation recently, he added.
Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor also congratulated the team for converting salt affected degraded lands into aquaculture farms through dedicated efforts over the last decade. Since, shrimp is a remunerative export commodity, international recognition and linkages are very important to strengthen cross border ties to reinforce the shrimp industry supply chain in India, he added.
