A five days international Workshop on “Genome Editing for Food Security and Environmental Sustainability” organized by Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana in collaboration with McGill University, Canada, University of Saskatchewan, Canada and Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, concluded today. Dr R S Sethi, Additional director of Research, GADVASU and convener of the workshop informed that the international workshop witnessed 19 guest speakers including 09 international and 10 national speakers from McGill University, University of Saskatchewan, University of Calgary, Queen’s University, International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, Mexico, NDRI, IMTECH, Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes and Biotech Consortium India Limited. Besides having scientific talks by galaxy of invited international and national speakers, this event also invited speakers from interdisciplinary and social sciences who interacted with audience on the importance of positive thoughts. The workshop offered the participants a hands-on training experience at GADVASU and PAU labs; as well as the opportunity for group discussion with experts under Project Formulations component. During the fifth and the last day of this event, Dr. Sharon Regan from Queen’s University, and Dr Kanwarpal S Dhugga from International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, Mexico shared their experiences and interacted with the participants.
Dr. S. S Gosal, Vice Chancellor, PAU was the Chief Guest of Valedictory function. He praised the researchers and scientists for having deliberations on the gene editing for Food Security and Environmental Sustainability. Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU informed that the theme of the workshop was very relevant in the current scenario. He highlighted that the scientific sessions in the workshop would be very beneficial to address the challenges related to food Security and nutrition as well as environmental sustainability. Dr. J.P.S Gill, Director Research, GADVASU and Coordinator workshop, mentioned that event was attended by 120 participants from across the country and globe. Dr Jaswinder Singh (Director, GEFSES) from McGill University congratulated all the collaborators and organizing team for organizing such a wonderful meeting.
Dr. R. S. Sethi, Dr Parveen Chhuneja and Dr. Y.P.S Malik, conveners of this workshop thanked the speakers, researchers, and participants for attending and significantly contributing towards this event. During the valedictory function, best poster awards were presented to the scientists and the students under different themes of this workshop.
