The College of Animal Biotechnology and College of Dairy Science and Technology celebrated ‘World Soil Day’ on 05 December 2022 at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. On this occasion, both the colleges jointly organized various events like Poster, Collage and Rangoli making to generate awareness on the importance of healthy soil for healthy life with the thematic message "Soils: Where food begins" in the general public and the university students.
Dr Meharban Singh Kahlon, Principal Soil Physicist, Department of Soils, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana delivered an invited lecture on “The Importance of Soil Health”. The speaker appraised the college faculty, staff and students about the importance of soil health and interlinked it with the health of plants, animals and humans. The students also recited the messages on ‘World Soil Day’ received from Sh. Narendra Singh Tomar the Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Dr Himanshu Pathak, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research & Education and Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Government of India.
On this occasion, Dr Habibar Rahman, representative for South Asia, International Livestock Research Institute and Former DDG, Animal Sciences, ICAR, Govt. of India also interacted with the university faculty and congratulated students for celebrating World Soil Day’ at Vet Varsity. Plants and saplings were also planted to mark this occasion.
A large number of students represented both the colleges in the poster making competition on the theme “Importance of Soil Health”. Amoldeep Kaur got the first prize while Anand Mishra and Bikramjit Singh got second and third positions, respectively. Ms. Anuragdeep Kaur and Ms. Priyanka Sahoo begged the first and second Rangoli awards, respectively. Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor congratulated the faculty and students for organising this event in GADVASU. Dr YPS Malik, Dean College(s) of Animal Biotechnology and Dairy Science and Technology thanked the faculty, staff and students for their active participation in this event.
