Tyson, a 4 years old male Labrador Retriever dog of 58 Bn. Border Security Force , Gurdaspur got a new lease of life after its life saving dialysis performed at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana (GADVASU) Multi-speciality Veterinary Hospital’s Dialysis Unit. Tyson was previously on border duty with 170 Bn. BSF and was handed over to 58 Bn. BSF from December 2019 for tracking and fence guarding. According to BSF , Tyson was involved in an operation at Indo-Pak border where it led to tracking and subsequent arrest of infiltrators some months back.
Dr. Randhir Singh, Assistant Professor (Veterinary Medicine), Department of Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex who performed the dialysis informed that Tyson was presented in emergency during night hours at university hospital in very critical condition. Conservative treatment was initiated shortly after arrival of Tyson and its complete evaluation revealed acute uremia with BUN levels > 140, creatinine 6.6 and Phosphorus 17 mg/dL. After stabilization, intermittent hemodialysis was performed on Tyson which led to its subsequent recovery from acute uremia with all uremic parameters within
normal physiological range. Had dialysis not been performed at the earliest, Tyson might have succumbed to the ramifications of acute uremia, Dr. Singh quoted.
Dr. S. S. Randhawa, Director of Clinics told that Dialysis facility for pets is only available at GADVASU teaching hospital in whole north India and only two other veterinary colleges of India have this facility. He told that apart from Tyson, numerous other dogs from Punjab and adjoining states have successfully undergone dialysis in our hospital to get a new lease of life. Dr. S. P. S Ghuman, Dean, College of Veterinary Science applauded the efforts of clinicians in setting up new standards in veterinary medicine in India.
