To promote organic vegetable cultivation and effective water management in kitchen garden, Krishi Vigyan Kendra Sahibjada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) organized Virtual Training Programmes for farmers/farm women on 10.05.2021 and 12.05.2021 under the NABARD sponsored project on "Promotion of kitchen gardening". During this programme, Dr. Parminder Singh, Associate Director (Training) highlighted the importance of vegetables in human diet and encouraged farmers and farm women to adopt vegetable kitchen gardening near their household especially during ongoing crisis of corona pandemic.
Programme Incharge, Dr. Munish Sharma delivered lectures on cultivation practices of vegetables, nursery raising, water management and organic farming. He shared the information regarding daily dietary need of vegetables per capita is 300 grams per day. Vegetables provide vitamins, minerals and fiber apart from other essential major nutrients. They protect us from various diseases as they contain phytonutrient and anti-oxidants thereby help in building immunity. Dr. Harmeet Kaur delivered lecture on eco-friendly and organic management of insect pest and diseases in vegetables. She stressed on use of trap crops, use of pheromone, light, water and sticky traps for control of insects. She also shared the knowledge about beneficial insects such as coccinellids, green lacewing, syrphid fly etc. which helps to keep the population of harmful insects under control. During these training programmes 45 farmers/ farm women participated and cleared their queries from experts regarding kitchen gardening.
