Vet Varsity Organizes Virtual Training on Best Management Practices for Shrimp Farming

March 26

College of Fisheries (COF), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) organised 5-days online training programme on “Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Shrimp Farming”. Total 78 participants (45 males and 33 females) belonging to twelve states and different categories (farmers, youth, extension workers, fisheries department field officers etc.), got registered in the said training program.

With an aim to foster techno-commercial skills among the aspiring participants, the training program sensitized the trainees about the importance of abidance to biosecurity, BMPs and food safety standards in successful adoption of shrimp farming in inland states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh etc. Complete package of practice for shrimp farming in inland saline areas, along with major constraints, remedial adaptive measures and guidelines, was provided to the participants through effectually tailored technical sessions; coordinated by the Program Coordinator, Dr. Prabjeet Singh and Technical Coordinators, Dr. Shanthanagouada A.H, Dr.  Anuj Tyagi and Dr. Naveen B.T., Assistant Professors from COF.

Technical knowhow in respect to pond preparation; potential biosecurity threats; biosecurity standard operation procedures (SOPs); seed quality testing; water quality management; feeding management; health management; disease surveillance/monitoring; judicious use of chemicals; shrimp quality and export; processing/value addition; innovative marketing strategies; safe effluent disposal; environment safety; available state/centre government promotional schemes; and utility services of GADVASU for shrimp farming was provided to the participants.

While addressing the participants, Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean College of Fisheries, advocated that farmers should adopt shrimp farming only under stringent biosecurity SOPs with recommended BMPs after acquiring required technical skills, as it is a ‘High Cost High Risk’ intensive culture practice; associated with remunerative economic returns being an export commodity of high international demand. Having a huge inland saline resource available in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, inland states hold gigantic scope of contributing to national fisheries export basket and economy through quality shrimp production, she added.
