Department of Livestock Production Management, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized two training programs for farmers on “Backyard poultry farming for inculcation of entrepreneurial skills among young farmers of Punjab” and “Experiential learning for youth of Punjab for developing entrepreneurial skills in piggery ”of one day duration of each training. The trainings were conducted under the guidance of Dr S.P.S Ghuman, Course Director and Dean, College of Veterinary Science. It was co-ordinated by Dr. Yashpal Singh, Dr. Daljeet Kaur, and Dr. Subhash Chandra. These trainings were conducted under the aegis of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Entrepreneurial development programme for SC Beneficiaries program operational in GADVASU. These were the offline programs organized by the department under SOP of Covid-19. 10 Farmers from nearby villages/ locality in each training actively participated in both the trainings.
Hands-on -training was imparted on various aspects of backyard poultry farming with the motive to polish the skills of farmers. Experts delivered lectures with practical tips on basic principles of housing and rearing, brooding care, nutritional requirements, health aspects to young farmers. Farmers were apprised about all aspects of pig farming viz., care of young piglets, adults as well as housing, breeding, health and marketing. The events were successfully completed with distribution of poultry and pig supplements, mineral mixture and extension materials like books on “Murgi Palana”, “Soor Palan” and herbal plants to strengthen the farming skills at farmer’s level. On this occasion, Mr. Rishikant Sharma, Manager, Bank of Baroda, PAU Branch also delivered lecture to trainees on short term loan schemes and financial support services for entrepreneurship development on behalf of bank. The trainees appreciated the efforts of the University for the welfare of livestock as well as the farmers. Dr. S.P.S Ghuman, congratulated the organising team to make it a successful event to serve the farmers through conduct of such extension activities.
