College of Fisheries (CoF), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) celebrated World Water Day virtually under the leadership of Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor GADVASU, to celebrate one of the 5 elements of life- ‘WATER’. In view of the fact that about 2.2 billion people on the earth have no access to safe drinking water, the event advocated not to overexploit, misuse, waste and pollute freshwater resources, so as to conserve water for future generations.
In the introductory address, Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean, College of Fisheries highlighted importance of water in human life in general and its role in fisheries sector with special reference to freshwater aquaculture. Briefing about R&D efforts made by the university to promote low volume aquaculture technologies, involving species and culture system diversifications, she recommended multiple utility of water through recycling with a message ‘No drop of water shall go waste’.
Dr. Shivakumar Magada, Head, Fisheries Research and Information Centre, KVAFSU, Bengaluru delivered a wonderful talk on ‘Water: Invaluable Gift of Nature’ through interesting examples, video and infographics in respect to daily life management to save water effectually. He impressed that every person must contribute, as every drop matters when one feels thirsty in a desert.
Dr. S.M. Shivaprakasha, former Dean, College of Fisheries, Mangalore also enthralled the audience with motivational success stories, where innovative rainwater harvesting by dedicated people converted dry lands of villages into green lands, leading to progressive development of agricultural, livestock and fisheries activities.
Prabdial Singh post-graduate student of CoF recited his heart touching poem portraying water as saying “Conserve me, I am your thirst; please don’t pollute me to the worst and don’t drain Mother Earth to become a desert”
Photography competition on the theme ‘Valuing Water: Judicious and Efficient Use’ was also conducted and 21 entries were received. Manu Shukla and Upinderjit Kaur of College of Dairy Science & Technology, GADVASU bagged 1st & 2nd prizes respectively. While Amaanat Kaur and Anupam of CoF shared the 3rd prize.
The event was conducted by a team of Scientists including Dr. Shanthanagouda A.H., Dr. Rajinder Kaur and. Dr. Jitendra Kumar. The celebration concluded with the thoughtful message “Let our water bodies breathe to make us breathe”.
