KVK, Tarn Taran organizes Awareness Week on Parthenium

As per the instructions and guidelines of ICAR-Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur and ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application and Research Institure, Zone I, Ludhiana, each institute has to organize a Parthenium awareness week with theme "Make your campus parthenium free" from 16-22 August 2020. In this context, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, organized a movement on Parthenium free campus The Parthenium was uprooted from the boundaries and roadside near to KVK and RRTC. The spray of weedicide was done at the boundaries of KVK Farm.

Dr Nirmal Singh incharge of this programme highlighted the extent and distribution of Parthenium. They further highlighted the adverse impact of said weed on human, animals and agricultural crops. Dr Balwinder Kumar Deputy Director (T) said that Parthenium is a poisonous, pernicious, problematic and allergic weed causing serious threat to human and livestock. It is considered as one of the greatest source of dermatitis, asthma, nasa-dermal, etc. Parthenium also infests every type of crop, orchards, plantations and even forest crops. Parthenium infestation severely reduces the crop productivity besides loss to biodiversity and environment. Dr Anil Kumar, emphasized on the life cycle of Parthenium and told how speedly it multiplies. He told that one plant has ability to produce 10000-25000 seeds and about 1.5 lacs seed may produce in 1 sq.m area. Moreover, it completes its life cycle in 3-4 months.
