A team comprising of Dr Kirti Dua, Incharge Wild life Centre & Prof Veterinary Medicine 
and Dr Mandeep Singh. Scientist, Animal Disease Research Centre GADVASU, visited flood affected area in the Shahkot subdivision of District Jalandhar. Due to the breaches in the Satluj river, around 80 villages of this subdivision are affected. With thousands of acres of land is submerged, hundreds of families are trapped in their houses surrounded by flood water. One could see the people along with their livestock taking refugee on the elevated bank of the river.
In these floods, people could evacuate most of their animals with only few causalities. Feeding, watering and preventing these animals from contracting contagious diseases were main concern. Incidence of snake bite also increases during this time. With the receding water persistent mud will be responsible for causing various types of foot ailments.
Both Government and private organizations were making round the clock 
effort to support these marooned people. Cattle feed was made available to many livestock owners. There was phenomenal dedication of local people. They were bringing loads of green and dry fodder for these people. State Govt. veterinary teams were ensuring the vaccination and treatment of sick animals to avoid any sort of disease outbreaks. Besides this team from Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were making all efforts to plug in the breaches.
Despite the relief work on war footing, there were huge economic losses especially to the marginal farmers whose sole family income rely on dairy animals. This type of situations certainly give us a lesson to have a better preventive measures.
