KVK, Tarn Taran Organised Farmer Awareness camp on “Management of Green Fodder and Feed for Milking Animals”

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Booh, Tarn Taran organized a one day farmer awareness camp on “Management of Green Fodder and Feed for Milking Animals” for dairy farmers of district Tarn Taran at its Campus. The training was attended by 30 progressive dairy farmers of Tarn Taran district. The main emphasis of the programme was to address the issues related with fodder production and feed management. Dr Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director, KVK Tarn Taran formally welcomed the farmers arrived from different blocks of Tarn Taran. Dr Kumar discussed about advance technologies to increase the quality of the fodder crops and various cropping systems to ensure the continuous availability of quality fodder throughout year. He emphasized that sole application of chemical fertilizers in imbalanced manner and more than recommended dose in fodder crops is not only deteriorating the soil health but, also affecting animal health.  Further, he stressed on balanced fertilization and judicious use of organic and inorganic source of the nutrients for sustainable fodder production.

Dr Navjot Singh Brar, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) and Course Coordinator shared his view on new technology of fodder crop production and their beneficial impacts on fodder productivity and quality. He discussed about the judicious use of pesticides in fodder crops and also highlighted the importance of hay and silage making to ensure year round fodder availability to dairy animals. He discussed about the outcomes of various Front Line Demonstrations and On Farm Trials on fodder crops conducted at farmers' fields in Tarn Taran district. Dr Gurdeep Singh gave tips regarding clean production of milk. Dr Udeybir Singh, Professor (Animal Nutrition), GADVASU, Ludhiana, discussed about advance technologies for preparation of animal feed. He guided farmers regarding preparation of quality feed for dairy animals at cheaper rate and also discussed about the quantity to be fed to dairy animals of different yield potentials.

 On the demand of dairy farmers, an “Association of Dairy Farmers of District Tarn Taran” was also formed with aim to improve the performance of dairy farms by organizing various extensions programmes on various aspects of dairy on the demand of dairy farmers. A 10 member committee was constituted to manage activities of association and to organize one awareness camp after every 3 months. They put demand for one training on management of calves and production of rabi fodders in month of September. The participants appreciated the efforts of the KVK Scientists for organizing the programme.
