Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran celebrated National Fish Farmers Day on 10th July 2019 at university, Ludhiana. Exposure visit for 50 farmers from three different districts i.e. Tarn Taran, Amritsar and Ferozepur was arranged by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran to College of Fisheries, GADVASU, Ludhiana to celebrate National Fish Farmers Day. Dr. H.K. Verma, Director of Extension Education, GADVASU, Ludhiana, was the Chief Guest for the function. Dr HK Verma interacted with the farmers and explained about the importance of the day that is commemorated in remembrance of scientists Dr. K.H. Alikunhi and Dr. H.L. Chaudhury who had invented Induced Breeding Technology (IBT) on this day way back in 1957. Further he emphasized on multiple breeding and production of big sized fingerlings of Indian and exotic carp breeds and also briefed about the achievements of the KVK Tarn Taran and University. Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran urged the farmers to take up fish farming as a major
enterprise to double the farm income with different integrated livestock modules. Farmers have seen Carp Hatchery, Breeding and Seed Production of Pangasius, management of different production and nursery ponds, ornamental plant and fishes at University Fish farm. Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dr. Vineet Inder Kaur and Dr Abishek from college of Fisheries interacted with the farmers. Dr. Bhanu Prakash. Ch, Assistant Professor (Fisheries) urged the unemployed rural youth to come forward and take up fish farming as a business venture. Also farmers visited at University pig farm to have knowledge about scientific pig farming. Dr. S. Gurdeep Singh, Assistant Professor (Livestock Production) informed farmers about feasibility of integrating fish farming with pig farming. Farmers expressed happiness for this exposure visit to celebrate the National Fish Farmer Day at the number one State Agricultural University in the country.
