Vet Varsity celebrates World Fisheries Day

College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana (GADVASU) celebrated ‘World Fisheries Day’, which is commemorated by the fishing community at International level every year on 21st November, to highlight the importance of World Fisheries in livelihood, food and nutritional security, engaging over 500 million people in the sector directly or indirectly and contributing about 15% to the total animal protein consumed worldwide. College organized “Poster Making’ and ‘Poetry Recitation’ competitions on the theme “Fish for Health and Wealth’. ‘Rangoli Making’ competition was also organized with the theme ‘Blue Revolution’. All the participants spotlighted role of fisheries as a savior being more remunerative, especially for farmers owning degraded lands in salt affected and waterlogged areas. Health benefits of fish were also presented artistically by the students in their posters and self-composed poems.

Performance of students in these competitions was adjudged by an expert team, comprising Dr. S. Rampal, Director Students' welfare cum Estate Officer, Dr. H.K. Verma, Director Extension Education, Dr. K.S. Sandhu, Dean, College of Fisheries and Dr. S.S. Hassan, Assistant Scientist (Fisheries) and NSS In-charge of the College. Congratulating the winners, Dr. Sandhu highlighted the importance of fisheries in socioeconomic development of the farming community being highly profitable as compared to many agriculture and livestock farming systems. Appreciating the talent showcased by the students, Dr. Rampal motivated them to harness maximum knowledge and expertise during their stay in the university and emerge as highly skilled graduates to serve the sector at state, national and international levels. While addressing the students, Dr. Verma applauded the contribution of fisheries sector in national economy and role of GADVASU in developing fisheries in the State, with special reference to aquaculture development in inland salt affected waterlogged waste lands of south west districts. Crowning ‘Milk’ and ‘Fish’ as complete food he also briefed the students about its nutritional edge over other animal products and its potential towards nutritional security in developing countries like India. The function concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Shanthangouda. He conveyed that College of Fisheries will be celebrating ‘World Fisheries Day’ every year not only to mark the value of fisheries in human life, but also to spread awareness for its conservation through various mass media tools involving farmers and concerned agencies.
