International Workshop on Newer approaches in Goat farming at Veterinary Varsity

Directorate of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized One day International workshop (05.11.2018) on the theme “Newer approaches in Goat farming”. Dr H K Verma, Director of Extension Education welcomed the International guest speaker and delivered talk on "GADVASU initiatives for promoting Goat farming" in Punjab state and set the tone for fruitful discussion on Goat farming. Dr Hein de Jong, Senior PUM expert, Netherland demonstrated various perspectives of Goat farming in Netherland with the help of videos and expert talk.  He apprised the participants that 'Saanen' goat breed is commonly reared at Netherlands and average production of this goat is about 4- 5 litres milk per day. Goat Cheese is the most common output from Goat milk by dutch people.  Dr Jong also discussed about problems faced by the goat farmers, common diseases of health management, Artificial insemination and value addition in Goat milk. He discussed the strategy adopted for prospering Goat farming in Punjab state. Further, the Hein Jong has visited various goat farmers of the State.

Dr Mandeep Singla, Department of Livestock Production & Management delivered lecture on Feeding and management practices of Goat farming. At the end, participants discussed about problems, future perspectives and newer approaches of Goat farming with experts. Dr. Verma further added that Directorate of Extension is regularly organizing international workshop for sharing information by experts to academicians and research scholars and this is the 2nd international workshop organized by Directorate in this year.  Other was held on Extension Strategies" on 17th September. Further, to uplift the Goat farming in the state, Progressive Goat Farmers Association and Welfare Society (regd.) is running under GADVASU and monthly meeting of this association is held on First Friday of every month. Dr S K Kansal, Coordinator of this workshop informed that Fifty six participants including academicians, deputy directors, faculty members from Regional Research Centre and Krishi Vigyan Kendras, research scholars and post graduate students had participated in this workshop. This is long association of GADVASU with PUM, Netherlands which deputes senior experts to solve the problems of the farmers or as per the request. Dr. A. S. Nanda, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU, Ludhiana congratulated the Directorate of Extension Education for organizing the workshop.  Dr. Jaswinder Singh and Dr. Rajesh Kasrija were instrumental for the smooth conduct of this workshop.
