Vet Varsity trains 41 farmers for pig-preneurship

The Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana strive its best to promote livestock farming as a sustainable entrepreneurship through various means. In the continuation of this efforts university organized one week training programme on Pig Farming as a viable means of self-employment and nutritional security. A total of 41 candidates including two female candidates attended the programme from different districts of Punjab and adjoining areas. Dr. H.K. Verma, Director Extension Education, told that university since its inception year promoting livestock farming amongst the youth especially educated unemployed as a mean of their livelihood security. He further told that livestock sector has bunches of option to adopt like dairy farming, poultry farming, goat farming, fish farming and pig farming, value addition of livestock produce, feed manufacturing etc. for all section of farmers viz. landless, small to large farmers through various modus operandi. One can adopt as per likeliness and resource available.

Dr. S.K.Uppal, Dean Postgraduates, interacted with the farmers with the words that utmost care should be taken to start a farm especially with respect to selection of breed and preventive measures to check the losses. He encouraged the farmers to adopt scientific practices emphasized during training programme and also given away the certificates to the trainees. Dr Jaswinder Singh, Technical coordinator, of this training told that trainees were apprised with various topics like breeds, breeding, management, shed design, weather management, vaccination protocols, diseases & their prevention, value addition of pork, Economics etc., He further told that besides the theoretical lectures practical training on handling of pig, measuring temperature, signs of healthy animals was also provided to the trainees. Dr Y.S Jadoun and Bilawal Singh coordinated the training programme and proposed the vote of thanks. Trainees hailed the efforts of veterinary university and were satisfied with the knowledge and facilities provided.
