Book written on Hygienic Meat Production by Vet Varsity experts, released

Department of Livestock products Technology of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana has published a book entitled “Meat Utpadan” in Punjabi for easy understanding by meat workers authored by Manish Kumar Chatli, Jaswinder Singh, Nitin Mehta and Pavan Kumar. This book was released by Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) and Director General ICAR along with Dr A.S.Nanda VC (GADVASU) and Dr B.S. Dhillon, VC (PAU) in a function at Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), Ludhiana. Dr. Manish Kumar Chatli HoD Department of Livestock products Technology informed that with the rapid urbanization and increasing purchasing power, people are turning towards meat consumption at large. Supply of safe, hygienic and wholesome meat to consumers is a key issue to handle. Punjab has a wide base of meat consuming population. But the quality and availability of safe and hygienic meat is largely governed by practices followed by butchers and meat workers. This section comprises of people who are underprivileged, uneducated and having relatively poor sense of hygiene. They are not trained to carry out slaughtering and meat handling procedures. There is a dire need for appropriate intervention in form of hands-on-training and relevant reference literature to enable them in this regard. Authors narrated that this book comprises nine chapters related with production, processing, value addition, byproducts management and utilization for enhanced returns and environmental sustainability. They have laid increased stress on quality clean meat production and practices for meat personnel. A project report for establishment of a byproduct utilization unit and list of suppliers for machinery is an added feature. Dr Mohapatra has applauded the efforts of authors in highlighting this issue of importance. He added that meat safety and quality control is attracting attention in light of emerging pathogens and food borne illness. Dr Amarjit Singh Nanda, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU added that training butchers and meat workers in quality meat production is an appreciable step. He asserted that this department is regularly organizing awareness meeting and conducting capacity building programme for ground level workers under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana.
