Vocational training on “Fish Farming” by KVK, Barnala

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Handiaya (Barnala) organized one week vocational training on “Fish Farming” for self employment. A total 23 rural youth and farmers from 15 villages of Barnala, Bathinda and Sirsa districts were participated in the training programme. Dr. P. S. Tanwar, Associate Director, KVK, Barnala inaugurated the training programme and said that fish farming is an emerging area for self employment and fish meat is beneficial for health from nutrient point of view. He emphasized that pig or poultry along with fish farming in integrated mode enhance the return and best utilization of resources. KVK is implementing a number of programs for farming community and farmers may get benefit by these programs by contacting KVK, Handiaya.
Khushvir Singh, Assistant Professor (Fisheries), KVK, Handiaya, gave theoretical and practical knowledge on construction of fish pond, different types of fishes, breeding & rearing of fishes, their integration with agriculture and livestock farming systems for efficient recycling of waste, various diseases and their control, preparation of fish feed and management of fish pond. More emphasis was given on practical aspects of the fish farming.
Dr. Surender Singh, Assistant Professor (Livestock Production), gave detailed knowledge on integrated fish cum pig farming. Dr. Kamaldeep Singh, Assistant Professor (Plant protection), discussed on integrated fisheries cum agriculture. Dr. Harjot Singh, Assistant Professor (Horticulture), delivered a lecture on integrated fish cum horticulture crops. Harwinder Singh, Senior Fishery Officer, Barnala also gave detailed information on the Punjab government schemes for starting fish farming as subsidiary occupation. An exposure visit of trainees was also arranged at Sukhminder Singh’s Fish cum Pig farm at village Upali (Barnala)
