Skill Development in Bee-Keeping through hands on training by KVK Barnala

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Ludhiana’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barnala organized five days skill development training on Bee-Keeping for the rural youth, farmers and farm women under the Guidance of Dr P.S. Tanwar, Associate Director, KVK Barnala . A total twenty five participnts from two districts namely Barnala and Bathinda of Punjab participated in this training programme. Dr K.S. Matharu, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection) acquainted the trainees , how to start bee keeping as self-employment and he emphasized on various aspects of commercial apiculture viz., different types of honey bees in India, life cycle of honey bees, seasonal management of European honey bees, management of  laying workers and queen less hives, swarming and robbing management and insect-pests and diseases of bees. He also deliberated on migration of honey bee colonies, feeding of honey bees during dearth period and different methods of colony division. Dr. H.S. Sohi, Assistant Professor (Horticulture) delivered lecture on availability of flora in different season in different parts of the country for bees and role of honey bees in pollination of fruit and vegetable crops as it increase yield.  Dr. Anjuly Sharma, Assistant Professor (Home Science) shared her views on health benefits and uses of honey in curing of cough and throat irritation, reducing ulcer and gastrointestinal disorders and other properties such as anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Khushvir Singh, Assistant Professor (Fisheries) also suggested the farmers to go for integrated farming like bee-keeping cum fish farming to enhance their income.
