Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mohali celebrates World Veterinary Day

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, S.A.S. Nagar, Mohali of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana celebrated ‘World Veterinary Day 2018’ at village Dulwan Khadri under the guidance of Dr. Yashwant Singh, Deputy Director, KVK Mohali. Forty farmers and farmwomen participated in the event. While addressing farmers, Dr. Singh discussed importance of this day. He told farmers that World Veterinary Day is celebrated every year on last Saturday of April to raise public awareness about the important roles veterinarians undertake. Each year, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and World Veterinary Association (WVA) declare a theme for World Veterinary Day. For 2018, the celebrations is centered around focusing attention to the crucial role veterinarians play in the development of more sustainable animal husbandry practices, which improve not only the health of animals, but also the health and well-being of people and the environment; he further added. He also encouraged farmers for rearing livestock for diversification of agriculture to improve their income.
Dr. Shashi Pal, Assistant Professor (Livestock Production) told that in many global rural areas, the inhabitants are greatly dependent on animals for their livelihood and veterinarians are working together with other health professionals to improve and develop new production systems that are also respectful of animal welfare and the environment. Dr. Parul Gupta, Assistant Professor gave lecture on value addition of milk and its products. She also stressed on marketing of value added milk products which can further improve the economic status of farmers, livelihood and food safety. Dr. Vikas Phulia, Assistant Professor gave lecture on prospect of fish culture in village community ponds. He also motivated farmers for integrating fish farming along with agriculture and other livestock rearing practices to enhance farm income.
On this occasion, an animal welfare camp was also organized and dewormer (Butox) and Panacur was distributed free of cost to sensitize farmers regarding ecto- and endo-parasites of livestock animals, respectively. Farmers were also made aware regarding summer management of animals and balance feeding of dairy animals. Dr. Singh briefed farmers regarding various facilities and university products being made available to the farmers. Mr. Gurinder Singh, Sale executive, Vet-needs Pharma displayed products of their company during the event. Ex Sarpanch of village Dulwan Khadri, S. Chhinder Pal Singh thanked KVK team for conducting the programme and praised KVK Mohali for conducting various animal welfare activities on regular basis.
