Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran Organizes Field Harvest Day on Happy Seeder Sown Wheat

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in collaboration with Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Tarn Taran organized ‘Field Harvest Day on Happy Seeder Sown Wheat’ in the field of S. Baljit Singh, Village Bangla Rai, Tarn Taran on 11th April 2018. S. Baljit Singh has sown his 45 acres of wheat with happy seeder. About 120 farmers of different villages of block Patti attended the programme. Navjot Singh Brar, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) gave detailed information about the importance of Happy seeder in managing the paddy straw. He said that happy seeder helped in timely sowing of wheat after paddy without burning of paddy straw, the problem of weeds is significantly decreased and there is also saving of irrigation water, as the crop sown with happy seeder requires 1-2 less irrigations. It helped in conservation of resources and also decreased cost of cultivation with same or more yield than traditionally sown wheat. Dr Anil Kumar, Assistant Professor (Soil Science) highlighted the role of happy seeder in maintaining soil fertility. He said that the paddy straw retained on the surface of field helps in maintaining moisture in soil, increase soil microbial population in soil and also increases soil fertility by recycling the nutrients. Sh. Sukhwinder Singh Block Agriculture Officer Patti, Bhupinder Singh ADO, Sandeep Singh ADO and Tajinder Singh HDO also expressed their views on importance of in-situ management of paddy and wheat straw. Farmers present on the occasion were impressed by the condition of happy seeder sown wheat and given their consent to adopt happy seeder for sowing of wheat without burning of paddy straw.
Navjot Singh Brar thanked the farmers for their active participation and interest. The participants appreciated the efforts of the KVK Scientists and Officials of Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Distt Tarn Taran for providing time to time guidance to the farmers for the adoption of advanced technologies for saving natural resources and to increase crop productivity.
