Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran organized awareness camp on ?Biofortification of wheat grains and fodder crops with zinc

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Booh, Tarn Taran organized an awareness camp on ‘Biofortification of wheat grains and fodder crops with foliar application of zinc’ on 19.03.2018 at Booh Havelian. About 80 farmers of village attended the programme. The main theme of the programme was to create awareness among farmers regarding the importance of zinc in crop, human and animal nutrition. In inaugural address, Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director, KVK, Tarn Taran welcomed all the farmers for their participation and highlighted the importance of the programme. He aware farmers regarding Zinc nutrition in crops, humans and livestock. Dr Kumar emphasized that intensive cropping system, use of high analyzing fertilizers and imbalanced fertilization is causing micronutrient deficiencies particularly Zn in the soils and plants. Experts from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Dr SS Dhaliwal, Professor (Soil Science) discussed the behavior of zinc in soil and how Zn deficiency appears in soils and plants. Dr Dhaliwal discussed the symptoms appeared in plants due to Zn deficiency and its managemental aspects. Dr Hari Ram, Professor (Agronomy) discussed that Zn deficiency has become a matter of serious concern of present time. It is causing severe problems in pregnant women and school going children. Death rates are increasing day by day owing to Zn deficiency. Dr Ram elaborated biofortification of wheat grains with foliar application of zinc sulphate in detail.  He emphasized that application of Zn as foliar application at flowering and grain filling stage improve Zn content in grains a lot. Farmers were advised to keep Zn fortified wheat for their own consumption for their family members so that enough Zn is met from it. Dr. Balwinder Kumar told that even straw of wheat gets also improved in Zn content after biofortification and thus helping livestock to meet their some demand of zinc. Dr Navjot Singh thanked all the farmers for their active participation and making this programme a success.
