CMC Ophthalmologist imparts training to GADVASU surgeons

The department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana in collaboration with Christian Medical College and Hospital organized a 7 day workshop on ophthalmic surgical techniques in dogs. Dr. Gurvinder Kaur, Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, CMC & H was invited as guest faculty to deliver lectures and hands on training in the field of Cataract and Corneal Surgery. Twelve faculty members and 20 post graduate students of the department were imparted training during this programme. Presently, the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology has got major facilities for diagnosis and management of eye affections in both small and large animals. Dr. Gurvinder Kaur was highly appreciable of facilities, infrastructure, clinical expertise and variety of clinical cases of ophthalmic diseases like cataract, glaucoma, corneal ulcers, cherry eye and pigmentary keratitis etc. being regularly treated at University Veterinary Hospital. Lectures and practical demonstrations pertaining to working on phaco machine, slit lamp eye examination, cataracts surgery, squint surgery, Keratoplasty with partial and full thickness grafts in small animals were delivered by Dr Gurvinder Kaur. In addition participants were given hands on training on eye models.

Dr. Jitender Mohindroo, HoD informed that this training course was designed to address the problems encountered during ophthalmic surgery in dogs. The department is regularly conducting phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implant for cataractous patients and is planning to introduce corneal transplant surgery in near future. This training would be useful for implementation of future projects proposed by the department, he added.

Dr. Simrat Sagar Singh, Dean Postgraduate studies said that the department has progressed enormously in the area of small animal ophthalmic surgery.

Dr. Nitin Batra, Professor and Head, Department of Ophthalmology, CMC&H, Ludhiana was also present on the concluding function.  Dr. Batra was in all praise for the department and offered to extend his help whenever required for the up gradation of the ophthalmic surgery. Dr. Tarunbir Singh and Dr Vandana Sangwan, Assistant Professors, who were the co-coordinators of this training course, thanked ICAR and GADVASU for funding the 7-day training course and thanked all participants for their support. Dr P.S. Brar, Dean, College of Veterinary Science appreciated the efforts made by the CMC for imparting training to the faculty and students of GADVASU. He stressed upon sustained future collaborative efforts between both the institutes.
