One week training on Scientific Pig Farming organized by KVK, Barnala

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana's Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Handiaya (Barnala) organized one week vocational training porgramme on “Scientific pig farming for self employment”.  A total 74 farmer, Rural youth and farm women from five districts namely Barnala, , Bathinda, Mansa, Shri Mukatsar Sahib and Sangrur  participated in this training programme.

Dr.P.S.Tanwar, Associate Director, Krishi Vigyan Kendra inaugurated the training programme  and said that pig farming in scientific manner is a profitable business because the feed conversion efficiency and prolificacy is much more of swine as compare to other enterprises of livestock. He also added that pig has special quality to convert the low quality and waste feed into meat.  He said that value addition of pork has greater opportunity of self-employment. He also added that pig farming as a component of integrated farming system is very beneficial for higher income of the family. He added that furrowing management is more crucial in pig farming and farmer must be alert during furrowing of a gilt/ sow.

Dr Surinder  Singh, Asstt. Prof. (Livestock Production) delivered detailed lectures on various aspects of pig farming such as  breed,  their characteristic and identification, housing requirements and shed designs for different groups of pig, their nutrients requirements, formulation of balance ration and  feeding managements, nutritional deficiency diseases and their measures,  maintain of various records and their benefits, breeding managements in swine for better reproduction, breeding strategies to be adopted to avoid inbreeding, prevention and control of diseases, vaccination and deworming schedule etc.  Sh. Rashbir Singh, progressive pig farmer of village Uppli  (Barnala)  shared his experiences with trainees. An exposure visit was also arranged to Future Pig cum Fish Farm of  Sh. Sukhpal  Singh at village Jethuke (Barnala)  . Mr.  Khushvir Singh Assistant Professor  (Fisheries ) delivered lecture on integration of fish farm with  pig farming ,dairy farming , poultry farming . Dr.P.S.Tanwar appreciated the trainees farmers for showing keen  interest during  whole training period and motivated them to start their venture & assured that KVK, Handiaya is always on their beck and call to provide technical support in future.
