Scientific pig farming for self employment at KVK, Barnala

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Barnala organized a five day vocational training on “Scientific Pig Farming for Self Employment” for rural youth and farmer. A total 49 youths from different villages of Barnala district were participated in this training programme. Dr. Prahalad Singh Tanwar, Associate Director, KVK, Barnala inaugurate the training programme and welcomed all the participants. He said that farmer can earn good profits by adopting pig farming and may utilize their resources judiciously and may be adopted as a business. He also emphasized that pig farming has great possibilities to solve the unemployment problem in the district as well as in the state. Dr. Tanwar motivate to the trainees to formulate the group of pig farmers to solve the marketing related problems. He also discussed about construction of proper housing, care of  sows during furrowing to reduce the mortality of piglets and nutritional deficiency diseases and their management in pigs. Dr. Y.S. Jadoun, Assistant Professor (Livestock Production), KVK, Barnala imparted technical knowhow on different aspects of pig farming viz; different breeds of pig, criteria for selection of breeding stock as well as pigs for marketing purpose, advantages of  pig farming in Punjab, role of pig farming in livelihood security and socio-economic development and different management practices in pigs farming etc,. Different experts’ from GADVASU and state Animal Husbandry Department were also invited to deliver the lectures on different aspects of pig farming.

An exposure visit of trainees was also arranged in Pashupalan mela at GADVASU Ludhiana and Dr. H.K Verma, Director of Extension Education, GADVASU, Ludhiana interact with trainees  and told that farmers may get piglets to start  pig farm. An another exposure visit of trainees was also organized at B.T. Piggery Farm, Sanghera(Barnala) of Mr. Dharminder Singh (Chief Minister Awardee from Barnala District, got first prize at state level) to acquainted the participant with practical exposure and interaction with him to share their experiences of scientific pig farming as a profitable venture and trainees were fully satisfied and  show the willingness to start the pig farming.
