Proper treatment is required to save animals from Black Quarter

The Scientist of the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Vety. Medicine of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University have attended outbreak of Black Quarter in Patiala Distt. in Cows and buffalo calves.

The farmers are advised to immediately vaccinate healthy dairy animals above two months of age against Black Quarter from the nearest Veterinary Hospital. Affected animals should be treated with high doses of penicillin morning and evening for one week from nearest Veterinary doctor. Dr. M.P. Gupta HOD Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Vety Medicine revealed that It is an acute infectious and fatal, bacterial disease of cattle, Buffaloes, sheep and goats. Young cattle between 6-24 months of age, in good body condition are mostly affected. Disease is caused by soil-borne organism. The disease spreads due to Ingestion of contaminated feed and contamination of wounds. He said that the symptoms of disease are high fever at 106°F, Loss of appetite, Depression, dullness, suspended rumination, Rapid pulse and heart rates, difficult breathing, Lameness in affected leg, crepitation swelling over hip, back & shoulder, Swelling is hot & painful in early stages whereas cold and painless inter ,Recumbency (prostration) followed by death within 12-48 hrs.

        Farmers are further advised not to purchase the new dairy animals from local market and from other states (Karnatka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Naidu etc) of India where the disease is prevalent.

While talking about general measures he suggested Isolation of infected and in contact animals, disposal of carcass either by deep burial or burning, proper disinfection of surgical instruments prior to operation and avoid grazing in affected area.
