Training programme on “Fish Farming” concludes at vet varsity

College of Fisheries (COF), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized a 5 days Training Program on “Fish Farming”. Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur, Course Director informed that a diverse group of 17 participants, including agriculture/livestock/fish farmers, private/government employees and enthusiastic students from Punjab, Uttarakhand and West Bengal, attended the training program.
Dr. Abhishek Srivastava and Dr. Sachin O. Khairnar, Scientists COF coordinated all the technical sessions to acquaint the trainees with ‘Package of Practice’ and ‘Best Management Practices’ (BMPs) for construction and preparation of fish pond; quality and stocking of seed; water quality, feeding and health management; harvesting; processing and value addition; and marketing. Trainees were apprised of prospective aquaculture related entrepreneurial activities like feed manufacturing, processing/value addition, aquarium fabrication, ornamental fisheries, intensive aquaculture systems (Aquaponics, Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems, Biofloc based aquaculture technology etc.), with an insight on importance of communication and managerial skills required for entrepreneurship. The trainees visited fish farms of progressive farmers, Mr. Jasveer Singh and Mr. Balwinder Singh, and modern fish market in district Ludhiana for real time interactive experience with supply chain stakeholders. Information regarding capacity building utility services offered by GADVASU and various state/central govt. promotional schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) were shared with the trainees and feedback was collected for impact assessment and suggestions to make these trainings more effective.
Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean, COF, communicated that tailor-made training programs are being organised by COF to instill need based skills among people aspiring to take up aquaculture as a full time/part time enterprise for self-reliance.  Dr. Parkash Singh Brar, Director Extension Education, GADVASU shared that the vet varsity is mandated to uplift the livestock and fisheries sectors with latest scientific practices and a widespread extension network across the state.
Dr, Inderjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU endorsed that university is committed towards capacity building of stakeholders and providing diverse utility services for comprehensive development of animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries sectors; with special emphasis on entrepreneurship development
