Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University organized a calf care day for beneficiary dairy farmers under Farmer FIRST Project.Calf care day was organized for dairy farmers of the operational area of ICAR funded ‘Farmer FIRST’ project at village Channanwal of Barnala district under the guidance of Dr. P.S. Brar, 
Director of Extension Education and Nodal officer of Farmer FIRST Project. Dr. Rajesh Kasrija, Co-PI of the project organized the calf care day. Dr. Navkiran Kaur and Dr. Gurkaran coordinated the whole event.
Around 50 beneficiary farmers from Kalala and Channanwal villages participated in this Field Day. A total of 137 calves suffering from different ailments were treated. Most of these calves were treated for endo-parasites. The beneficiary farmers were made aware of different causes of mortality in calves and various medical issues like diarrhea, emaciation, weight loss etc. Dr. Kasrija also made them aware of scientific rearing of calves. He emphasized that calves are the future of dairy industry and investment 
once done on scientific calf care comes in the form of good milch animal or good sire. He further discusses the proper care of pregnant animals, care during calf-birth and, then, management of calves 
during 48 hours of birth. He further advised farmers that proper care of calves lead to early maturity of heifers which further results in early conception and more productive life.
Farmers were also told about importance of disbudding, colostrums feeding, deworming, ectoparasite control and vaccination etc. Such events help the dairy farmers to deal with various health issues of their calves, reduce the mortality rate in the operational area and made farmers acquainted with scientific calf management practices.
The beneficiaries were told to contact university experts through dedicated mobile numbers: 62832-97919 and 62832-58834 on all working days from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM whenever they face any kind of difficulty in rearing calves.
