Awareness programme on crop residue management with the theme of in-situ management of crop residue was organized in Government Senior Secondary School, village Kachha Pakka, block Bhikhiwind and National Public School, Naushehra Pannuan of district Tarn Taran . More than 350 students and school teachers participated in these programmes organized by KVK Booh . Dr Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director (T), KVK welcomed all the students and teachers and briefed about the project on crop residue management funded by ICAR, New Delhi. Dr. Kumar said that residue burning causes several detrimental effects on environment as well as on the soil. The crop residue burning practices emit greenhouse gases that led to environment pollution, climate change and impair microbial population in soil that reduce the overall soil fertility and crop productivity. The government is providing facilities for the management of crop residue by providing subsidies on implements used for the management of crop residue. He said that main purpose of organizing these programmes in schools is to aware and educate students, so that they may also educate their parents on this aspect. Apart from that Krishi Vigyan Kendra, regularly aware farmers on said aspect by organizing different extension activities in the district. Dr Anil Kumar soil scientist said that incorporation of crop residue in soil not only improve soil health, but also reduces dependence on costly fertilizer inputs. Retention of residue over the soil surface maintain moisture content in soil and also reduces irrigation requirement. Dr Suresh Kumar, Animal Scientist discussed about the utilization of paddy straw as feeding and bedding material for animals. Dr Prabhsimran Kaur Gill, SMS Agronomy at KVK, discussed that sowing wheat with happy seeder reduces the incidence of weeds. On this occasion, competition on poster making, essay writing and Public Speaking was organized among the students of different classes. The students with best performance were honored by KVK. Principals of the school thanked the KVK team for organizing these programmes and motivating students on different aspect of crop residue management. Dr Anil Kumar thanked the school management for providing opportunity.
