Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran Celebrates World Pulses Day 2022

Krishi Vigyan Kenda, Booh, Tarn Taran celebrated ‘World Pulses Day 2022’ at village Wara Sher Singh of block Bhikhiwind, Tarn Taran under the theme of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat- Harnessing Potential Pulses for import substitution’ The United Nation in collaboration with Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) has designated February 10th of every year to celebrate as International Day of Pulses. A total number of 80 farmers and youth attended this programme. Dr Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director (Training), KVK, Tarn Taran welcomed all the participants and awared farmers regarding nutritional and environmental benefits of pulses. He said that pulses are an important component of sustainable food production system as well. Pulses are important source of healthy diet for human and livestock as these are considered as powerful super foods due to good source of protein, micronutrients (Zn & Fe), minerals & B-Vitamins. Intercropping with pulses increases farm biodiversity and creates a more diverse landscape for animals & insects. Dr Kumar also urged farmers to spread awareness of the health benefits of pulses in neighborhood and social network. Dr Anil Kumar, Assistant Professor, Soil Science described in detail about the cultivation practice of summer pulses such as moong and mash. Further, pulses reduce dependence on costly fertilizer input especially urea as they fix atmospheric nitrogen and add to soil. Due to low carbon footprints, pulses also help mitigating climate change. He said that pulse crops not only give good nutrition but also enhance the soil fertility. Dr. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Animal Science delivered lecture on use of pulses Stover in livestock feed management. University literature and uromin lick was also sold to the farmers.
