The practice of stubble burning must be discontinued to protect our environment and improve soil fertility. With this motto, 25 farmers of village Mundhon Mastana were trained on ‘In-situ Crop Residue Management’ . This training was coordinated by Dr. Harmeet Kaur and Dr. Vikas Phulia. Dr. Kaur apprised the farmers regarding harmful effects of burning crop residues on environment and human health, and appealed them to mix residues in the fields itself instead of burning. She also shared tips for the management of rodents in fields. Dr. Navjot Singh Brar while elaborating operational management of farm machinery used for residue management encouraged farmers for the direct plantation of wheat in paddy harvested fields. Dr. Phulia described the uses of paddy residues for industries for the production of combustible fuel and compost. He also cited the inputs and facilities provided to the farmers by Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Punjab and KVKs for the appropriate management of crop residues. Crop residues can be efficiently utilized by mulching in cultivation of horticulture crops, these views were expressed by Dr. Munish Sharma. Dr. Shashi Pal explained the utility of crop residues as animal fodder after treatment with urea. An exposure visit of trainees was also organized to Deptt. of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, PAU Ludhiana wherein the information on features and operational management of farm machinery was given to them. Dr Parkash Singh Brar, Director Extension Education, GADVASU, Ludhiana also interacted with trainees and assured them full support to in every possible manner. On the concluding day, Dr. Parminder Singh, Associate Director, KVK described various uses of crop residues in animal husbandry. Village farmers thanked KVK experts to organize such programme for enhancing their knowledge.
