Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized a two-week training course on poultry farming. Eleven budding farmers from different parts of Punjab participated in this training programme. It was organized under BHARAT KA AMRIT MAHOTSAV- 75 Years of India’s Independence.
Dr. S. K. Kansal, Professor; the technical coordinator of the programme informed that poultry farming is one of the most profitable entrepreneurial ventures for diversification of agriculture. He further stated that depending upon capacity of land holding, the capital and marketing facilities; one can venture into either layer farming meant for table egg production or broiler farming meant for meat production and he advised the farmers to adopt strict bio-security measures at their farm to ward off communicable diseases.
Dr Y. S. Jadoun and Dr Gurjot Kaur Mavi, co-ordinators of the training programme revealed that the trainees were taught about specific breeds and strains of the poultry stock, GADVASU poultry breeds, hatchery management, construction of sheds for commercial farming, backyard poultry production, integrated poultry farming, management of poultry waste, prevention from heat and cold during environment stress, economical and balanced ration for different stages of the birds, making different products from egg and meat, their branding, vaccination in birds, post mortem examination, preparation of project reports etc.
Dr R K Sharma, HoD interacted with the participants and informed them about various facilities and utility services provided by the University for livestock farmers and he advised the farmers to remain in touch with university experts thereafter. He encouraged the farmers to share their problems with university experts so that prompt solutions may be provided to them.
The trainees were informed about the importance of monthly magazine Vigiyanak Pashu Palan published by GADVASU and also about special books on Poultry farming.
At the time of concluding the trainees were given saplings of medicinal plants by AYUSH wing of GADVASU under the theme AYUSH APKE DWAR. Certificates were distributed to the trainees.
