Goat farming – an evergreen enterprise: say Vet experts

Under the aegis of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav - 75 years of India’s independence', Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized one week training programme on Goat Farming for improving family income of small and marginal farmers and to run goat farming as an enterprise on commercial scale. Dr Rajesh Kasrija and Dr Kulvinder Singh, coordinated this training programme. They informed that a total of 21 trainees, including one women participant from Punjab and adjoining states participated in this training programme. The trainees were provided with latest knowledge about various breeds, breeding, management, shed design, weather management, vaccination protocols, diseases & their prevention, value addition of meat, milk and economics of goat farming etc.

Besides this, practical training on handling of goats, measuring temperature, signs of healthy animals, age determination by seeing dentition and hoof management has also been provided to the trainees. Dr. Parkash Singh Brar, Director Extension Education informed that goat farming is an evergreen profession and this is gaining momentum in the state as young farmers and farm women are showing keen interest in goat farming. He further emphasized that value addition of goat products (milk and meat) can enhance income of farmers. He further added that on the eve of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, GADVASU is providing various books, magazines and Journals to farmers at 20% concession during the month of August, 2021. The livestock farmers can contact Farmer Information Centre of Veterinary University for further information.  Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Head, Department of Veterinary Extension Education said that Veterinary University is disseminating knowledge  on Goat farming in the form of printed books and through a Mobile app, which can be downloaded from Google Play Store.  More such training courses will be organized in the month of August, 2021.
