To commemorate World Milk Day on 1st June 2021, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, SAS Nagar (Mohali) organized a webinar on importance of feed to produce quality milk in dairy animals. 61 dairy farmers and cattle feed millers participated in this webinar. Dr Parminder Singh, Associate Director, KVK advised the dairy farmers to be more vigilant while selecting the ingredients for manufacturing cattle feed. As quality of ingredients influence the quality of milk. He also highlighted the effect of poor-quality feed on animal health like reduced immunity, more infections, low milk yield and reduced fertility. He said that the elite milk consumers are more aware regarding the quality of milk and are ready to pay premium price for the quality. Farmers discussed their day-to-day problems regarding TMR, Dry and Wet form of feeding, quality of maize, inclusion of certain items viz. rice polish and deoiled rice bran. Use of certain micro ingredients like trace minerals, toxin binder etc. were also discussed. Importance of routine testing of feed and milk was also discussed. Dr Shashi Pal, Assistant Professor (Livestock Production) stressed on the milk quality check on the basis of Somatic Cells Count (SCC) which reflects the udder health of the animals and mastitis condition. As the SCC increases above one lac per ml of milk, lactating animal reduces milk production by 0.7 kg milk per day. At the end, poor quality milk affects the human health and cause public issues. Dr Parul Gupta thanked all the participants on the behalf of KVK- SAS Nagar (Mohali) and hoped the farmers will follow the recommendations of the experts.
