KVK, Barnala distributes Honey Beehive as startup kit for self-employment

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barnala organized a skill oriented Bee-Keeping training Under Attracting and Retaining rural youth in Agriculture “ARYA” project under the guidance of Dr P.S. Tanwar, Associate Director cum PI of this project. In this training 11 unemployed rural youth participated from different villages of the District Barnala. Dr. Tanwar highlighted the importance of ARYA project for capacity building of rural youth in Bee-Keeping. Apart from the training rural youth, profitable Agri-based enterprise such as a Bee-keeping is crucial for attracting and retaining youth in agriculture, he added. He said that trained Bee-keeper will be connected with public and private institutions like Markfed. He also informed that in a short span Honey Processing Plant will be functional at KVK Barnala. Trained Beekeepers of KVK Barnala may process their honey at KVK. After processing, packaging, labeling, value addition and getting license from FSSAI, farmer may get high price of honey in the market. Dr. Tanwar said that KVK will generate entrepreneurship models in Beekeeping that would help to retain youth in rural areas. On this occasion a total of 34 honey beehives and tool kit of beekeeping were distributed to the trained rural youth as a start-up kit.

Dr. Kamaldeep Singh Matharu, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection) delivered lecture on identification and management of honey bees during the summer, monsoon, autumn and winter seasons. He stressed upon selection of honey bee colonies for stock improvement and importance of queen bee.  He also informed about management of queen less colonies and mite in honey bees. He said that apart from honey famer may also extract bee venom, royal jelly, pollen, propolis and bee wax from honey bees. All the latest machines and equipments for extracting above said product are available with KVK, Barnala. Dr. Harjot Singh Sohi, Assistant Professor (Horticulture) shed light on the importance of honey bees for pollination of various fruit and vegetables crops. He also said that pollination by bees enhance the yield and quality of different crops. Dr Anjuly Sharma, Assistant Professor (Home Science) emphasized on formation of Self Help Group (SHG) for Beekeepers to get higher income.
