Goat farming a profitable venture for landless farmers – Dr. Inderjeet Singh

Dr. Inderjeet Singh Vice-Chancellor, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) , Ludhiana visited at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran and stocked up various extension activities such as development of demo units and strengthening of laboratory amenities at its campus. Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director of KVK welcomed Vice Chancellor at KVK.  Vice-Chancellor addressed the trainees enrolled under a week long skill oriented vocational training course entitled "Scientific Goat Farming" . He regarded goat as poor man's cow and mobile refrigerator in his speech. He showed his concern regarding the existing figures related to goat meat production in Punjab as more than three quarters of goat meat consumed in the state is imported from other states of India. Consequently, there is a huge potential for entrepreneurship development in goat farming sector in the state. KVK and farmers should jointly make endeavors towards promoting the state a self-sufficient province in goat meat production and to carry these ventures forward towards its export, he added. Further, he enlightened the trainees regarding importance of adopting scientific goat farming techniques at their goat farm. He suggested the farmers to practice good marketing techniques of goat milk by identifying the nearby hospital settings around their whereabouts to cater health requirements of dengue patients in this critical scenario of covid-19 pandemic and exacerbate their income with minimum investment. He discussed a diverse factors contributing towards good goat rearing practices. First and foremost was to allow the animal to graze in open farm in order to satiate the digestive system, which, in turn, results into good quality milk production. Further, Dr. Singh emphasized on the advantages, for instance, meager capital investment in goat farming, resultantly, farmers bears no colossal financial assistance to start up this subsidiary occupation. Dr. Singh motivated the resource poor farmers regarding popularization of backyard poultry farming to ensure regular daily income. Vice Chancellor along with KVK team visited a high-tech dairy farm at village Sohal and disseminated awareness regarding escalating silage production as well as organic fodder production by utilizing animal excreta produced at the dairy farm. He said that KVKs are light house of knowledge where every farmer should visit.
