Directorate of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized a webinar to mark World Antimicrobial Awareness Week. The World Health Organization (WHO) has earmarked 18-24th November of every year to celebrate this week to create awareness among general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the spread of drug resistant infections. Sharing his views on the subject, Dr. Parkash Singh Brar, Director of Extension Education, GADVASU informed that the aim of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week is to create understanding of antimicrobial resistance at the global level. Careless application of antibiotics on livestock is a major public health risk. He expressed his concern at the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in the livestock sector at the farm level. He said that the webinar was organized to help the livestock farmers acquire intimate knowledge regarding the ill effects of misuse of antibiotics on food animals. Dr. R K Sharma, Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education was the speaker at the webinar. Dr. Sharma spoke in length about the perils of the widespread use of antibiotics on animals. This practice is detrimental to the health of animals as well as the consumers of animal products. Dr. Sharma then introduced the listeners to conditions that do not require the use of antibiotics. He informed the audience that identification of disease of dairy animals is a major step in decision making regarding the use of antibiotics on animals. It can go a long way in minimizing the use of antibiotics to the required level. He also shared important tips for the prevention of diseases in dairy animals. Dr. Jaswinder Singh and Dr. Arunbeer Singh coordinated this webinar. The webinar witnessed a huge participation from farmers, students and professionals. They further informed that the extension wing of the university regularly organizes online training programmes and webinars on various topics of farmers concern.
