KVK Mohali Organises Vocational Training on Scientific Fish Farming

In order to encourage the youth to adopt fish farming for employment generation, a one-week vocational training on Scientific Fish Farming was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mohali from 21st to 27th October, 2020 at its premises. Nine youth attended this training program. Dr. Vikas Phulia the coordinator of this training

program discussed about vast and untapped potential of fish farming as an enterprise in the Punjab state. He also delivered series of lectures such as site selection and pond construction, species selection, pre-stocking, stocking and post-stocking management, nursery management of carp seed, feeding and health management, integrated fish farming, etc.

The KVK roped in five subject experts to deliver lectures through virtual mode. Dr. Prabjeet Singh discussed about the potential of shrimp farming in inland saline areas of Punjab. He provided in-depth knowledge regarding the shrimp farming technology and highlighted the pioneer work done by College of Fisheries, GADVASU, Ludhiana for the development of aquaculture in waterlogged and saline areas.

Dr. Abhed Pandeyshared the role of water quality management in aquaculture while Dr. Ajeet Singh, delivered talk on fish processing and value addition. Mr. Khushvir Singh, from KVK Barnala shared knowledge regarding breeding and seed production of ornamental fishes and prospects of ornamental fish farming as an enterprise for the youth. Mr. Shyam Kumar Poddar, the founder and CEO of a Kolkata based Fish Floc Company delivered a lecture on Biofloc Technology.

The trainees were also shown various video documentaries viz. fish farming developed by ICAR-CIEF, Mumbai, ornamental fish farming and aquarium fabrication. An exposure visit of trainees was organised to fish farm at Chamkaur Sahib of progressive fish farmer, S. Amarpreet Singh Hansrao (2019 CM awardee) who is practicing integrated farming involving piggery, fishery, agriculture, poultry and biogas production. He also shared his success story with trainees and motivated them to adopt fish farming.

On the concluding day, trainees gave their feedbacks and thanked KVK for planning training meticulously. Dr. Phulia, Training Coordinator thanked the trainees, invited experts and KVK staff for their support to make this training programme a great success.
