project on "Promotion of Agricultural Mechanization and Machinery for In- situ Management of Crop Residue" at village Assal Uttar (Khemkaran), District Tarn Taran. Approximately 250 farmers from 10 villages of district Tarn Taran attended above programme from different villages. Sh. Kulwant Singh, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Tarn Taran graced the camp as the Chief Guest and told the farmers for not to burn paddy straw as it will cause bad effect on environment. Dr. Rajbir Singh, Director ATARI, Zone-1, Ludhiana, stressed that we all should make efforts so that no farmer in the Punjab state should burn the paddy straw as it causes adverse effect on soil health and will cause serious consequences for future generations and explained in detail about various implements like Happy Seeder, Chopper, Mulcher, which can be used to manage paddy straw properly. He also said that KVK, Tarn Taran will do full efforts to make the villages burning free.
Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director (Training), Tarn Taran emphasised on the importance of In-situ paddy straw management among the farmers and he said that Central Government has announced a subsidy scheme on farm machinery & implements and farmers can avail this subsidy scheme. Further Dr. Kumar told about the various products such as mineral mixture, uromin lick, bypass fat, oral magnet, milk testing kit etc. developed by the university. He also gave detailed information about importance of paddy straw in feeding of dairy animals and to cut down the feeding cost. Live demonstration of different machinery was displayed in the programme and literature related to residue burning was also distributed to the farmers. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Different government organizations exhibit their products to the farmers. Dr. Nirmal Singh informed that among vegetable, large area in the district Tarn Taran is used for potato and early pea cultivation and farmers can cultivate peas and Potato by burying paddy straw residues underneath 15-30 cm in the soil by using reversible Mould board plough. Dr, Anil Kumar stressed that many Micro-nutrients and organic matter gets lost by paddy straw burning. Farmers visited KVK’s stall for purchasing the university books, mineral mixture, magnets, uromin lick and bypass fat. All the farmers assured that they will disseminate message of KVK for not to burn paddy straw to every farmer of district Tarn Taran and will put their whole effort for residue management.
