Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Vetrinary & Animal Sciences, University, Booh, Tarn Taran organized a vocational ‘Scientific Pig Farming’ training at its Campus. 40 farmers belonging to different villages of district Tarn Taran participated in the training course. Scientific knowledge on various aspects of pig farming was devised in this training related to pig farming, breeds of pigs, breeding, feeding, artificial insemination related techniques, feeding and management of pigs, rearing piglets, scientific breeding interventions and prevention and control of diseases of zoonotic importance.
Speaking in the inaugural session of the training programme, Dr Balwinder Kumar Deputy Director (Training) and Course Director, discussed about the role of livestock sector in uplifting farmers’ income. He stressed upon the successful running of pig farming, which ultimately helps in good returns. He also highlighted the facilities available at GADVASU, Ludhiana for the upliftment of livestock sector in the state and urged the farmers to get maximum benefits from said facilities. Dr Kumar also told that such type of trainings helps farmers, farm women, and rural youth in developing the agricultural entrepreneurship through livestock diversification. Pig farming is gaining momentum in state and can be good mean for earning profit from this venture.
Dr Gurdeep Singh, Assistant Professor (Livestock Production) described about scientific breeding principles and interventions, housing management practices, treatment & control of diseases and various feed formulations. The experts from GADVASU, Ludhiana Dr Amit Sharma, Dr Sandeep Kaswan, Dr Ahwani and Dr Bilawal also delivered their experts talk and interacted with farmers on different aspects of pig farming such as preparation of pig house, feed management, different species of pig, fodder/feed management for pigs, marketing of pig, artificial insemination related techniques, integration of pig and fish enterprises, etc. Similarly, experts from KVK viz. Dr Anil Kumar, Dr Bhanu Prakash Ch. and Sh Navjot Singh also interacted with participants on assigned topics. During training course, an exposure visit of farmers was also conducted to Farmer Field School set up by KVK at Sandhu Pig Farm, Sarhali Kalan for practical learning, where farmers got knowledge about different operations and required technical inputs for pig farming. Dr Gurdeep Singh proposed the vote of thanks at the valedictory function and thanked the trainees, visiting guest and faculty for the efforts to make this training programme a success.
