"World Fisheries Day" organise at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barnala

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barnala, celebrated “World Fisheries Day” on 21 November, 2016 at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Handiaya, Barnala in guidance of Dr. Prahalad Singh Tanwar, Associate Director (Training), KVK, Barnala. Rural youth, fish farmers and farm women from 20 villages of Barnala and Sangrur, Mansa and Fazilka were also participated in this programme.

Dr. P.S. Tanwar welcomed all the participants. He highlighted the activities carried out by KVK for welfare of farmers of Barnala district and motivated the participants to develop Self Help Group (SHG). He informed that women may adopt the ornamental fish farming as self employment.

Sh. Khushvir Singh, Assistant Professor (Fisheries) explained about the importance of World Fisheries Day as it is celebrated all over the years since 1998. He informed about the different types of cultivable fishes, scientific rearing and management of fish pond as well as integration of fish farming with agriculture and livestock farming systems for efficient recycling of waste and motivated them to start fish farming. He also emphasized the importance of ornamental fish culture, different types of ornamental fishes and fabrication of fish aquarium.                    

Dr. Yogendra Singh Jadoun, Assistant Professor (Livestock production) deliberated on the integrated fish cum pig farming and made aware of various livestock management practices to the farmers. Sh. Harjot Singh, Assistant Professor (Horticulture) also delivered a lecture on importance of vegetable crops. Video films on fish farming, ornamental fish culture and judicious use of water were also shown to the participants.

A quiz competition was also held and a total 10 prizes were distributed to the winners by Dr. P.S. Tanwar.
