Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Barnala organized a five day vocational training from 05th September 2016 to 9th September 2016 for rural youth and farmer. A total 19 youths from Barnala and Sangrur district participated in this training. Dr. P.S. Tanwar, Associate Director, KVK, Barnala inaugurated the training programme and said that bee-keeping has converted in an occupation and may be adopted as a business. He also emphasized that bee-keeping has great possibilities to solve the unemployment problem in the state as bee keeping may be adopted for self-employment. Dr. K.S. Matharu, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), KVK, Barnala imparted technical knowhow on different aspects of bee keeping like identification of important caste of honey bee, European bee life cycle, seasonal management, queen bee rearing, laying worker, availability of flora, feed and feeding management, demonstration on honey extraction, insect-pest and diseases of honey bee. He stressed upon use of only recommended chemical at accurate dose for management of mite and wax moth in honey bees. Dr. Shikha Bathla, Assistant Professor (Home Science) delivered a lecture on honey regarding its medicinal value, nutritional benefit, its bio-products, common adulterants used in honey, how to test the adulteration and value addition of honey for employment and income generation. Mr. Khushvir Singh, Assistant Professor (Fisheries) also suggested the farmers to go for integrated bee-keeping and fish farming, for increasing income. Sh. Jagdev Singh, Deputy Director (Horticulture), Sangrur also gave detailed information on the Punjab government scheme for starting bee-keeping as subsidiary occupation. An exposure visit was also arranged at Akal bee farm of Mr. Harjinder Singh at Chema village for trainees.
