Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Barnala organized a five day skill based vocational training course for rural youth and farmers. A total 25 rural youth and farmers from 13 villages of 4 district namely Barnala, Moga, Bathinada and Sangrur were participated in this training programme. Dr. P.S. Tanwar, Associate Director, KVK, Barnala inaugurated the training programme. He said that there is great scope of self-employment in the field of bee keeping and more income may be generated by scientific adoption of Bee-Keeping and by processing of honey. He motivated the trainees for formulation of groupof bee keeper to solve the problems in marketing of honey. He also emphasized that KVK, Barnala is ready to provide technical support to the trainees in future for establishment of their bee colonies. Dr. K.S. Matharu, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), KVK, Barnala imparted technical
knowhow on different aspects of bee keeping like identification of important caste of honey bee, european bee life cycle, seasonal management, queen bee rearing, laying worker, availability of flora, feed and feeding management, method of honey extraction from hives, insect-pest and diseases management of honey bee. Dr. Harjot Singh, Assistant Professor (Horticulture), delivered lecture on availability of nector and pollen in different crops. Mr. Khushvir Singh, Assistant Professor (Fisheries) delivered a lecture on integrated bee-keeping with fish farming. Dr. Anjuly Sharma, Assistant Professor (Home Science) discussed on value added products from honey like honey-ginger syrup, honey turmeric and ginger antiseptic and honey-lime. Sh. Jagdev Singh, Deputy Director (Horticulture), Sangrur told about various schemes implemented by State Department of Horticulture, Punjab for bee-keeper.
