Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran organized field day cum awareness programme (Canola Day) under cluster frontline demonstrations on oilseed at village Dadehar Sahib, Tarn Taran. The main theme of the programme was to aware the farmers regarding health benefits, processing and marketing of Canola Sarson. Around 100 farmers from village Dadehar Sahib and adjoining villages participated in the programme. Dr RK Rana, Principal Scientist, ICAR-ATARI, Zone I, Ludhiana was chief guest of the programme. Dr Parminder Kaur, Incharge FASC, PAU, Tarn Taran along with her team also participated in the event. Speaking at the inaugural session, Dr Balwinder Kumar welcomed the Chief Guest and visiting dignitaries and highlighted the mandate and activities of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra. He told that with the help of KVK, farmers have sown frontline demonstrations on oilseed (Gobhi Sarson Canola -7) in different villages under scheme Cluster FLDs on Oilseed funded by ICAR. Dr. Kumar said that farmers of the district have taken special liking to the cultivation of canola mustard as there has been tremendous increase in the area under its cultivation. The liking is due to health benefits and medicinal properties of canola oil. According to experts, the canola oil is not only rich in Omega-3 & Omega-6 fatty acid but also contains saturated fat that helps to reduce the cholesterol level. Oil is also used to treat joint stiffness, skin & heart problem. Apart from various health benefits canola mustard also provides rich dividends to the farming community.
Dr RK Rana shared his views with farmers on different aspects of oilseed crops cultivation and stressed on inclusion of oilseed crop in cropping system in rotation. Dr Piverjeet Kaur Dhillon shared the health benefits and processing of canola oil. Dr Anil Kumar elaborated the detailed scientific cultivation practices of canola sarson and other important oilseed crops. Dr Parminder Kaur discussed about the insect pest and disease control in oilseed crops. KVK and FASC, Tarn Taran also displayed exhibition stalls during the event. At the end of the programme, Dr Anil Kumar, proposed vote of thanks to dignitaries and farmers for their participation and making this programme a success.
