Kisan Mela on in-situ Management of Crop Residue by KVK Booh

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran and ICAR-ATARI, Zone-I had organized Kisan Mela on “Promotion of Agricultural Mechanization for in-situ Management of Crop Residue at Ras Mehal, Amarkot (opposite BSF Campus) . In this event, information related to Crop Residue Management was disseminated among farmers. The event was graced by sarpanches and farmers of about 20 villages, officials of Dairy Development Board, Animal Husbandry Department and various other line departments.

Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran said that the KVK has adopted 10 villages in the district and made about 10,000 acres of area crop residue burning free. About 400 farmers gathered for learning new and improved agricultural practices for conserving environment. Dr. Anil Kumar, Assistant Professor, Soil Science asked farmers to take pledge not to burn paddy straw this year and described the alternatives. He also told that with in-situ crop residue management, soil quality is enhanced which ultimately will improve soil fertility. Dr. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Livestock Production told farmers that paddy straw may be used as bedding material for animals and with effective utilization, it can reduce feeding cost of livestock also. Dr. Piverjeet Kaur Dhillon told farmers about the bad effects of crop residue burning on human as well as livestock health. With the help of crop residue management technologies, certainly farmers will be able to shun the practice of burning and will conserve the environment, said Bohar Singh, a progressive farmer of village Algo Kothi who is being associated with KVK.

Many companies have displayed their products. University products such as mineral mixture, urominlick bricks, bypass fat etc were also displayed and farmers were seen paying keen intetest in these products. An Exhibition was also arranged for farmers to disseminate various technologies among them. Farmers thoroughly enjoyed the event and learnt the harms of burning paddy straw and promised never to burn paddy straw.
