The agricultural students of Amritsar College of Engineering & Technology, Amritsar visited KVK Booh, Tarn Taran to learn about the new techniques related to crop production and livestock. The exposure visit of the students to KVK was led by Sh. Parminder Singh and Ms. Shalini Thakur, Assistant Professors at ACET, Amritsar. The students were acquaintance with different demonstration units such as vermicompost, apiary, azolla, moringa, crop cafeteria, machinery bank and laboratories of home science, soil testing and animal science at KVK. The students were mobilized to ‘information technology’ unit of the KVK, where detailed discussion on different aspects of agricultural and livestock sectors was carried out. In IT unit, Dr Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director (T) showed and discussed about new techniques of paddy straw management such as super seeder, happy seeder, pusa decomposer, MB plough, baler, etc. He also elaborated about silage production technology to ensure round year fodder availability for dairy animals. The breeds of buffalo, goat, cow, poultry, etc. with their characters suitable to Tarn Taran region were also shown to the farmers. Similarly, the different SHGs working in the district with the guidance of KVK and their activities were explained to the students. The students were motivated to become entrepreneur by adopting ventures such as dairy, goat, pig farming, fish farming, mushroom cultivation, bee keeping, value addition, organic produce, etc. The products prepared from water hyacinth by a group of farm women also shown to the students and told that how one can earn wealth from waste. Various models on vermicompost production, silage making, beekeeping, integrated farming system, zero waste technology, etc. were also shown and described to the participants.
