Seminar on Food and Nutrition for Farmers held at KVK, Tarn Taran

Krishi Vigyan Kendra under the aegis of ICAR and GADVASU organized National level campaign in the series of events under “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”, for the month of August 2021 with the theme “Food and Nutrition for Farmers” at its campus. During the event about 50 farmers attended the live webcast of Union Agriculture Minister, Government of India. Various stalls were arranged inside KVK premises to aware farmers about nutritional aspects related to crops, livestock and human being. During the event, Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director, KVK Tarn Taran explained the role of bio-fortified crops, fruits and vegetables in daily diet to achieve nutritional security among farming family. He said that the concept of nutri-garden should be spread to every school, anganwadi centres and various villages to address growing malnutrition deficiency among the masses. He also expressed that under-nutrition is one of the world’s most serious, but least addressed, public health challenge and there is urgent need to tackle this problem on war footing.  As the world moves towards the new sustainable development goals, and hence, there is urgent need to concentrate on human health and nutrition for improving the economic development of the country. Dr.  Anil Kumar, Assistant Professor, told farmers the ways to improve the soil health in the district so that nutritious crops and foods can be grown from the soil. There is a need to change the lifestyle to address diseases such as hypertension and diabetes among humans.  During the event the farmers were made familiar with the view that good nutrition is our first defence against diseases and our source of energy to live.  Farmers learned the ways how to produce bio-fortified wheat, rice and fodder crops such as maize and berseem through discussions. Various livestock technologies such as mineral mixture, bypass-fat, uromin lick, silage making and literature related to livestock and human nutrition was also displayed in the exhibitions.
